Drama But With Structure: What To Expect From The Bollywood Appearances At Cannes Film Festival 2019

The 72nd Cannes Film Festival begins today, the annual film festival held in the scenic countryside Cannes in France previews films of all genres from all around the world. The city of Cannes for the next week is about to be bustling with some of the biggest names in the film industry from around the world and among those forerunners are some of our Indian beauties that have made a name for themselves on the red carpets of the prestigious film festival.

1. AISHWARYA RAI BACHCHAN

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Cannes truly became a household name after Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who has been making her yearly visit to the French country since 2002. From her first appearance in a yellow saree by designer Neeta Lulla, her famous off shoulder blue princess gown in 2017 and her 2018 breathtaking peacock inspired wonder by Dubai-based designer Michael Cinco, the actress always has us waiting to see what she wears at the film festival events.

We’re hoping the actress will take a more unconventional route this year compared to her usual Cannes look in an Ashi Studio outfit she is scheduled to wear. Ashi Studio is the same brand that is responsible for Deepika Padukone’s over the top couture pink ruffle dress she wore last year.

We looked at a few of his couture wear from his Spring/ Summer 2019 collection that we think Aishwarya would add her sparkle to. While the designer is known for big dramatic dresses with exaggerated details, we’d love to see Aishwarya leap beyond her usual body hugging off shoulder uniform.

2. DEEPIKA PADUKONE

Deepika Padukone

From the white and gold Rohit Bal saree to the Zuhair Murad cape gown that now also adorns her wax statue at Madame Tussauds and her 2018 Ashi Studio pink ruffle couture outfit, Deepika Padukone has mesmerised us each time she steps on the Cannes red carpet. Taking notes from her MET Gala 2019 outfit which was all about structure and drama, a favourite of her designer for this year Peter Dundas is the one we’re taking a punt on.

We think this by far is the best designer-actor duo we have come across. With Deepika’s slender frame and Dundas’ exuberant couture designs, this one is bound to amaze us for sure. A look at the designers couture Spring/ Summer 2019 collection speaks for the extravaganza we will be served. His current collection features leopard prints, sequins and a lot of leather, so here’s hoping we see our tall Bollywood lass amaze us with some cutting edge outfit this year too.

3. SONAM KAPOOR

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s everyday life is a Cannes red carpet moment, the fashionista has never let us down ever since her debut in 2011 when she walked at the international film festival in a  white Jean Paul Gaultier gown to the Anamika Khanna 2013 pale pink couture net saree dress that brought on a trend that is still very prevalent. The international fashionista even had the British designer due Ralph & Russo create a custom lehenga for her 2018 appearance, the first one ever by the international designers.

The actress picked the designer duo to dress her up this year too and considering both are ardent cape lovers, their Spring/ Summer 2019 couture collection aligns with Sonam’s current fashion vibe.

4. KANGANA RANAUT

Kangana Ranaut

This is the second round of Cannes festivities Kangana Ranaut will be a part of. The actress in 2018 had us completely wowed in her Zuhair Murad dusty mint gown with a waist cape to die for! Even her embroidered cat-suit from Nedo by Nedret Taciroglu pushed a notch up with her curly tresses left natural was breathtaking. Can’t forget her Sharmila Tagore vibe black saree by Sabyasachi either.

 and Shane Peacock Creation

This year the actress is all set to stun us all with a Falguni and Shane Peacock creation which the actress claims is the ‘saree of her dreams’, the saree is said to bring forgotten weaves to the international audience, while it’s a new customised saree, a look into the designer duo’s collection gives a little sneak peak into what might be featured at the red carpet this week. Mirror work, embroidery or chrome appliqué methods from the past, we can’t wait to see the outfit!

5. HUMA QURESHI and DIANA PENTY

Some of the other actresses who are scheduled to appear at Cannes include Huma Qureshi and Diana Penty who is all set to make her debut on the Cannes red carpet. Hina Khan, the famous television actress will be on the red carpet too for the screening of her film Lines. So many Indians at Cannes, we can’t wait for them to mesmerise the world with their beauty just as we are.
